I always have difficulty starting things. This blog, for our website, is really no different. I don’t know what I should tell you, because really I don’t know what you want to know. I guess I should start with the origins of the ssd art collective. Two people did the paintings featured on this site. I’m member 1 – though I’m not sure why. I paint. Member 2, the photographer, was most likely too polite to take the first position, though he probably should have. ssd was his idea. It goes so far beyond the two of us. I am only the most recent incarnation of the name. Google ,“Stab Stab Die,” and you’ll see what I mean.
I said before that I have difficulty starting things, and that’s true. It takes me hours of looking at a photo, or a canvas before I actually touch a brush. I’m not a planner though. I am a procrastinator. I put things off. I wait. But with ssd, everything fell in to place. It wasn’t work. We just started talking. We talked about where we’re from, and why we create art. Member 2 told me about his time in Detroit, and I reciprocated with my time in Chicago. Our urban backgrounds and styles were aligned and it only seemed obvious that we should pair up.
I was already doing photo transfers with found photographs. Member 2 had literally thousands of photos to scour through. It’s really an amazing thing to sit and see the world through the eyes of someone else. I was struck with the photos that Member 1 took. He found beauty in the mundane and comfort in the darkest corners of the city. Immediately I was struck by the images and I wanted to share my work with him.
Our paring started on a whim but has grown to something big. It’s exciting stuff. I hope you have the opportunity to check back often. We’ll add new work as often as we can. Thanks for visiting the site.
